Abstract:
Social withdrawal, social media addiction and relationship difficulties seem to be the behavioural figures characterising adolescence. On the other hand, the compelling desire to express oneself and to have one's opinions recognised is of paramount importance during the developmental age. In this context, it is possible to understand why the phenomenon of hate speech has adolescents and young adults as its main protagonists: the loss of democratic values, developmental specificities and belonging to marginalised groups, sometimes exacerbated by the coexistence of multiple additional vulnerabilities, are determining factors. This contribution intends to reflect on the links between the desire for free expression and hate speech in adolescence and to propose, as a possible educational strategy that can be implemented in schools, the promotion of social media literacy starting from the active participation of young people and the enhancement of their digital skills.
