Educating for peace and cultural diversity to establish a new, aware and supportive citizenship

Abstract

The training citizenship plays an unavoidable role in the field of education and leads to a strict comparison between new challenges of globalization and migration and on the other hand the crisis of the nation-states and its traditional patterns. The values of the peace and cultural diversity must set up the ground of dialogic and  aware citizenship. In the essay the author, who contributed to the Guidelines on Education to the Peace and the Human Rights of MIUR 2007, takes into examination the recent rules of United Nations of Unesco and European Union regarding to the issues of Education and Cultural diversity and Human Rights. The article reconstructs the basic lines of the “invention of democracy”, with essential references to the history of political thought and, even more, the social actors (first of all the labor movement) that have supported and fed the democracy itself in the contemporary age.
