Abstract:
The paper analyzes integration strategies for asylum seekers and beneficiaries of international protection, as suggested by the Integration Strategy Framework and the Guidelines developed within the European AMIF project “INTEgreat”. Based on research conducted in five European cities (Athens, Barcelona, Limerick, Nicosia, and Varese), these tools aim to promote participatory and sustainable strategies in local contexts. The qualitative study, which includes document analysis and 35 interviews with asylum seekers, beneficiaries of protection, policymakers, and reception professionals, highlights barriers to integration, such as language obstacles, bureaucratic complexities, discrimination, and service fragmentation. However, opportunities for social innovation also emerge, suggesting that stronger intercultural relations, targeted policies, and active participation can enhance integration in local settings.
