Invisible Cities as laboratories of democracy: learning cities from Calvino’s perspective, between education and relationships

Abstract:

The learning cities model is recognised for its perspectives on relational renewal, lifelong learning and social innovation. Emphasising its educational value for an intercultural, sustainable and glocal citizenship, this paper explores the paradigm’s link with Italo Calvino’s The Invisible Cities. Five thematic cores are identified: boundless knowledge; adaptation and development; immateriality and symbolism; individual and collective; emotion, perception, interpretation. Thus, learning cities are understood as laboratories of democracy where pluralism is nurtured and the human can flourish.
