Self-Determination Theory and Project-Based Learning: a Research-Training path to enhance motivation for learning

Abstract:

Recent Italian educational policies, aimed at implementing the orientation reform outlined in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), have introduced significant updates in the school system. From the 2023/24 school year, orientation programs have been launched in upper secondary schools to reduce school dropout rates, bridge the gap between school and the job market, promote lifelong learning, and enhance teacher training. Intervening on student motivation is one of the key factors in achieving these objectives. This paper explores how motivation can be encouraged in the school context through the application of the principles of the Self-Determination Theory in Project-Based Learning, providing practical guidance to teachers through the Research-Training approach.
