The city behind bars: educational pathways and confined stories in the penitentiary institutions

Abstract:

Education in the penitentiary facilities plays a fundamental role in the fields of lifelong learning and inclusive education, both of which are priority purposes for a Learning City. In fact, in recent years, the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning has intensified its commitment to support programs and initiatives for the education of incarcerated individuals. This proposal aims to offer an original contribution on the subject examining the city of Rome, which has a number of significant experiences in this field. Following a brief historiographical reconstruction of the right to education in Italian penal facilities, the presentation will outline a qualitative study on a non-formal education project managed by the Cultural Heritage Superintendency, in synergy with the Universal Civil Service, including direct testimonies from the young volunteers who participated in the activities.
