The Individualized Education Plan applied in the context of parental education: A case study in Friuli Venezia Giulia

Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the educational practices undertaken by a socio-educational community of Friuli Venezia Giulia (Italy), which is the most representative case of secondary homeschooling. The educational services hereby described are aimed at adolescents exposed to the risk of early leaving (ELET) from school – because of cognitive deficits, special needs, or other psycho-social issues. Two innovative elements are revealed. First, the formative intervention is original in preventing ELET outcomes, since it exploits homeschooling in a novel way. Second, the educational ecosystem thusly created solves important procedural issues. Namely, the key tool to accomplish the reduction of early dropout is the Individualized Education Plan (IEP), which is fashioned in a way that makes it participated by all stakeholders and the adolescent himself.
