The NEAR – Network for Empowerment, Autonomy, and Resilience Project. Reception Practices and Social Inclusion of unaccompanied migrant minors

Abstract:

As of 30 June 2024, the number of unaccompanied immigrant minors in Italy was 20.206 (Ministero del Lavoro e delle Politiche Sociali, 2024) a figure that has been steadily increasing since 2022. More frequently, these minors arrive close to the age of majority, with urgent needs related to housing, employment, and education. The NEAR – Network for Empowerment Autonomy and Resilience project examined these aspects in three Italian regions (Lazio, Emilia-Romagna, and Apulia) through 15 focus groups with operators involved in the reception of unaccompanied immigrant minors. The study highlighted the need for targeted interventions to support social inclusion and the transition to adulthood, fostering autonomy, social integration, and educational opportunities. Particular attention was given to access to work and housing, the development of educational pathways for inclusion, and the creation of support networks within local communities.
