Training in digital citizenship: a research-training programme for future nursery and primary school teachers

Abstract

This paper discusses a research-training project, launched in the 2024-2025 academic year, aiming to promote active digital citizenship among future nursery and primary school teachers. The research employs a mixed-methods approach (Creswell & Creswell, 2018), starting with a quantitative diagnostic phase to assess initial digital competences using the SelfieforTeachers tool (European Commission, 2023). This was followed by a training module delivered as part of the Educational Technology Laboratory (45 hours), whose outcomes are explored through a qualitative analysis of the digital mediators produced by the students. Data triangulation suggests that aligning with European frameworks (Redecker & Punie, 2017) can foster the transformation of technologies into tools for educational mediation (Sweller, 2005; Ala-Mutka, 2011; Bocconi et al., 2018; Rivoltella & Rossi, 2019; Tammaro et al., 2020; Michelini, 2022; Baldacci, 2023; Zanon et al., 2024).
