Training teachers for the critical use of generative AI: a qualitative analysis of teachers’ and students’ open-ended responses


Abstract

This study analyzes representations, uses, and critical issues of generative AI in education based on 723 participants (in-service and pre-service teachers, university and secondary school students). The analysis, grounded in the socio-cognitive model and the PRAXIS framework, employed LLM-assisted coding using two open-source models (Gemma 4 and Qwen 3.5) with human verification on a sample, organizing the corpus into 82 thematic wiki pages. GenAI emerges as operational support for summarizing, explaining, translating, and producing materials. Critical issues concern insufficient institutional support, perceived inadequate preparation, cognitive impoverishment, and a shared boundary that accepts AI as an aid while rejecting it as a substitute for personal elaboration and educational responsibility. Differences across cohorts point toward differentiated training pathways.
