University lecturers between social fields, social worlds and communities of practice: empirical analysis of a case study

Abstract:

This paper explores the complex dynamics involving university lecturers, particularly professional lecturers, within the contemporary academic context. Using a theoretical framework that incorporates the concepts of communities of practice, social worlds and social fields, the case study presented here invites reflection on how these lecturers position themselves across different social configurations. In particular, it highlights how their hybrid presence, between professional and academic contexts, offers opportunities for teaching innovation and connections to the professional world, but at the same time generates tensions and challenges. The research, conducted through interviews and focus groups at the Communication Area of a university institute, highlights the challenges related to the fragmentation of the educational experience, the transmission of the scientific habitus and the long-term sustainability of the integration of different professional figures in the academic context.
