Fake news and critical awareness: an exploratory study

Abstract:

This contribution presents the results of a training course carried out at the University of Palermo on the topic of fake news. The study involved 191 students enrolled in the Primary Education Degree Program, aiming to assess their understanding and familiarity with this phenomenon. Before introducing theoretical concepts and media analysis activities, a questionnaire was administered regarding their opinions, sources of information, and the amount of time spent using such tools. The findings of this research provide insights into the students' comprehension of fake news and their ability to distinguish between true and false information. This study contributes to the field of education by offering valuable data for the development of educational programs addressing the issue of fake news and enhancing critical awareness among university students.
