Narrative, rules, and relationships: tabletop role-playing games as catalysts for social dynamics

Abstract

This study explores the potential of tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs) as tools for developing social skills and strengthening interpersonal relationships within group settings. It focuses on Dungeons & Dragons, the pioneering game of the genre, where the goal is not to win but to co-create a story through the interaction between players and the game master. This ongoing dialogue, both regulated and creative, generates an activity that is simultaneously playful, narrative, and social, fostering a shared space of collaboration and exchange. Using a mixed-methods approach that combines questionnaires, observations, and interviews, the study highlights an increased perception of social competencies, stronger group cohesion, and the formation of authentic interpersonal bonds among participants.
