A teacher training course to introduce the class to storytelling and share environmental education experiences through digital tools

Abstract:

A century ago, Celestin Freinet (1925) introduced the “school journal” and supported the idea of a school that knows how to tell stories and use “techniques” to communicate with the outside world. Today we have exceptional tools to communicate, but research shows that teaching rarely knows how to involve students in the effective use of digital tools to make their voices heard and participate. This paper analyses a professional development activity aimed at co-developing multimedia products that tell the story of a field trip to explore the sea. In October 2023, six classes from three schools (6-13) in Veneto visited the WWF Miramare MPA for two days (MIM-MASE project “#iosonoambiente”) and took part in adventurous workshops about the sea. When back, the 26 class teachers attended an online course aimed at supporting - with experts and tutors - multimedia works by students. We present contents, methods, results and monitoring outcomes of these activities.
