The Learning City as a model of social inclusion

Abstract:

Contemporary cities often appear as places, or “non-places”, within which pluralism and cultural diversity, rather than becoming encounters and opportunities, become limits and obstacles, increasingly fueling prejudice and the social exclusion of those who – due to their multiple histories of poverty, hardship, migration, gender discrimination – embody otherness. Social inclusion – also through the guarantee of inclusive and equitable quality education for all – therefore becomes an educational emergency that indiscriminately concerns formal, non-formal and informal contexts. The Learning City fits into this scenario as a pedagogical model capable of responding to the complexity of today’s needs and challenges, since widespread and ongoing training, as well as targeted educational planning, play a strategic role in promoting a culture of differences and in the processes of democratization, development and peace.
