What children say about play and playing in early childhood education: let's listen to them

Abstract

Playing is an all-children’s right, and preschool education has a fundamental role in ensuring that playing is guaranteed in its pedagogical and curricular proposal. This article addresses the importance children attribute to play and do it in the school environment, also seeks to reflect on the urgency of listening to them on this topic. Their voices highlight aspects that deserve the attention of educational professionals and other societal actors regarding children’s rights, including the right to play. The narratives presented in the text are part of a study with 4 and 5-year-old children attending preschool in Brazil and reveal that play is the main activity they wish to experience in their daily school lives.
